February Meeting Minutes

Jefferson County Entrepreneurial Advisory Team (JCEAT)
February 22, 2010
5:15 P.M.
Hillsboro City Hall
Meeting Minutes
Members Present:  B.J. Eavy, Mary Ann Gebhardt, Phil Gebhardt, Gery Marmaduke, David McKinney, Gene Roth, Melissa Scheer, and Shirley Williams.
The meeting opened with discussion about the Dream Workshop, since Melissa needed to attend another meeting.  Melissa & Gery reported on the meeting with Ms. Durrwachter:
    • There will be 5 groups of 6 students
    • The teams will be created by Ms. Durrwachter from her entrepreneurial class, then everyone else from other groups who participate will be dispersed into the groups when the time is appropriate.
    • 2 students who took the workshop before are in her class, but they will be used as a banker, tallying scores, or selling supplies, rather than them going through the class again as a student.
    • On Friday, April 30th the workshop will be between about 8 and 1:30 p.m.
    • Melissa Scheer & Gery Marmaduke will be facilitators for the workshop.
    • Venue is the Viking Room at Jefferson College as in the past.
    • Chuck Banks, County Executive, will be the workshop opening speaker.  JCEAT will tell the students who Chuck Banks is and what he does before the time when Chuck speaks.
    • It is hoped that the leaders of the 7 FBLA areas in our region will be interested in coming to this Dream Workshop, so they can see what it is all about and perhaps think about taking the program to other schools.
    • On Tuesday, April 27th at 7:35 a.m. - Unit 1 & part of Unit 2 will be taught in Ms. Durrwachter’s classroom at Hillsboro High School to allow more time during the workshop.
    • On Thursday, April 29th at 7:35 a.m. – Unit 2 & 3 will be taught in Ms Durrwachter’s classroom at Hillsboro High School to allow more time during the workshop.
    • Ms. Durrwachter will talk with the bus people to be sure we can keep the students until about 1:45 on the workshop day.
    • We will need between 8 – 10 volunteers for the April 30th workshop day.  David McKinney and Paul Klossner are the Volunteer Coordinators.
    • The coordinators for securing donated prizes for the workshop are Mary Ann & Shirley, with Debbie as a resource.  Debbie has the list of people who donated last time.
    • Debbie secured some funding last time in case there are some things we need that are not donated.  BJ has the remaining $205 of that money, so let her know if it is needed.
    • David is willing to help whoever is doing the taping of the floor, because he has experience from last time J.
    • Greg Tucker is checking to see if he can pay for lunch as in the past.
The ACE Team Project was discussed with the ultimate outcome being that hopefully someday Jefferson College will implement this program into their curriculum for thorough coverage in Jefferson County of the things needed to support and train entrepreneurs.
Meanwhile, we have the pilot ACE Team that still meets monthly and hopes to continue doing that.  They have some issues they would like presented at their meetings, one of which is Taxes.  JCEAT discussed this for a while and the conclusion was that they really don’t need a CPA, Tax Consultant, or Lawyer to talk with them, rather just having this conversation might help.  Those JCEAT members who can do it will be at the ACE Team meeting on Thursday, February 25th to have this discussion about taxes.  It seems they are making it harder for themselves than it needs to be.
JCEAT will also be trying to identify entrepreneurs to form a new ACE Team as soon as possible.  They may or may not eventually combine with the original team.
Web Site - One Stop Reference Source for Entrepreneurs – there will be a meeting with the JCGDA on March 4th at 1 p.m. at the County Executive meeting room to discuss working together on this project.  JCGDA is also talking about a website for entrepreneurs and there is no sense in having two.  Brenda King has already been working on the one for us and will be housing it on the JOIN-N site with links to whatever we need.  We will report on this meeting at the next JCEAT meeting, or by email if there is something urgent to let you know.
The next meeting of JCEAT will be at the Hillsboro City Hall on March 22, 2010 at 5:15 p.m.  Please try to attend as your support is greatly needed.
The meeting adjourned at 6:40 p.m.
Respectfully Submitted by:     B.J. Eavy, Assistant to the Secretary

Meeting Minutes 1/26/10

Jefferson County Entrepreneurial Advisory Team (JCEAT)
January 26, 2010
5:15 P.M.
Hillsboro City Hall
Minutes of Meeting

    B. J. Eavy opened the meeting with a welcome and introductions. Those members present were: B.J. Eavy, Mary Ann Gebhardt, Phil Gebhardt,
Paul Klossner, Gery Marmaduke, David McKinney, Gene Roth, Melissa Scheer, Shirley Williams, Debbie Wilson, and Kenny Wilson.  Each person told us something about themselves that we probably did not know.
ACE Team report: B. J. reported that her conversation with President Cummiskey of Jefferson College did not result in a definite answer.  He has not talked with the people he needs to discuss it with and will probably not have an answer for a while.  JCEAT decided to proceed with another ACE Team in addition to the pilot group, which wants to continue as a group.  There is no reason to be idle concerning the ACE project while waiting for an answer from the college. However, it is important to stay in touch with the college and be ready to assist them when they are ready to include entrepreneurship and the ACE Team concept in their offerings. JCEAT members are going to think about which very small start-up businesses might be interested in being part of an additional ACE Team and we will discuss it again in February.  We will also think about people to invite to give presentations to ACE Teams.  These presentations need to be very basic and at the beginning level.  The Pilot ACE Team felt the presentations and also the coaches were very good, but some were way too advanced to do them much good right now. They are so small and so new that they really need the bare basics.
The “Be All You Can Dream” Workshop status was reported on by Gery Marmaduke:
      1. Gery invited JCEAT members to attend the February 17 meeting at the high school from 10:30 – 11:40 a.m. with Mrs. Durrwachter, our main contact at Hillsboro High School.  If you attend, be sure to sign in at the office before going to the classroom.  Discussions will include how to revamp scheduling and perhaps hold part of the program in the classroom before the actual workshop.  In addition, we will discuss the bus schedule with her to see if the bus can pick the students up later from the workshop. These two changes would make the timing far more doable on the day of the workshop.
      2. Gery will take care of booking the Viking Room and Annex for the workshop.
      3. Melissa & Gery will be the workshop facilitators.  They feel that two facilitators will be sufficient, especially if the introductory parts of the workshop can be done in advance of the workshop.
      4. David & Paul will share the duties of the Volunteer Coordinator.  Paul has the list from last time and they will start contacting people soon.
      5. Mary Ann & Shirley will share the duties of the Prize Coordinator.  The list of donated prizes from last time will give them a good place to start asking individuals and businesses to participate.

The Proposed Web Site will be created by Brenda King, who will work with Meredith and Phil to develop content.  This will be a One Stop Reference Source for Entrepreneurs and will be connected to the JOIN-N site and the library system will link to them as well.  When it is up and running, it will be a big help to entrepreneurs in Jefferson County and other places as well.
The JCEAT members all agree that at this time we are continuing the projects that are most relevant to our mission.  To add more projects would dilute the ability of this committee to give the support necessary for success.  We will evaluate our progress on a regular basis and make decisions accordingly.  All three JCEAT projects, ACE Team(s), Dream Workshop, and Website are priorities; therefore, we will simultaneously work on them all using plans in place and those developed along the way.  The issues small business people face are critical and the JCEAT is dedicated and committed to doing all they can to help the struggling entrepreneurs of Jefferson County and beyond.
The next meeting of the JCEAT will be called by our Chair, Gery Marmaduke on February 22, 2010 at 5:15 p.m. at the Hillsboro City Hall.
Adjournment was called by Kenny Wilson, who has volunteered to be the Secretary for the JCEAT.
A big “thank you” to all members of JCEAT for your willingness to actively work to make all the plans become reality.  Be safe and rest assured, Spring is coming soon.     BJ
